it’s quite often an expression of trust

because a poem or a story or a painting are often things that come from the heart

little pieces of the artists themselves

and if they’re willing to share it with you

you should appreciate it

Not the most interesting story, but I met Mason Raymond at a signing a little after the Cup finals. He was still in his back brace but I was glad to see him up and moving around. When it got to our turn, my cousin’s friend wanted to ask him how he has sex in his back brace, but I thought that was a tad inappropriate so he asked Mase how he got in and out of cars. Mase kinda chuckled and said, “With a lot of help”.

Then there was that other time where I asked Chris Higgins if he had a “long day” because that was the first thing that I blurted out of my mouth when I saw him. SIGH

Hi Pavel Datsyuk, you’re a great hockey player and really funny.

3: Do you play hockey?

No, but I wish I did. Looks fun.

4: Patrick Kane comes up to you in a bar and starts hitting on you, how do you react to him?

I’d tell him I don’t have low standards.

5: What/Who got you into watching hockey, and how old were you?

You can’t avoid hockey here. Chances are, someone you know personally is a fan. I remember I drew a poster I taped onto a window of our house when we were in the Stanley Cup finals in ‘94. I didn’t become an actual fan until early last year though. My cousins had a huge part in that.

6: Have you ever gotten a reply/RT (or any interaction whatsoever) from a hockey player on Twitter? Who was it from & what did they say?

Ryan Kesler retweeted something I wrote, and Eddie Lack replied back to me.

7: Opinion on Roberto Luongo?

Doesn’t deserve the all the blame he gets. He’s a tough guy, worked on his mental game, became stronger. Don’t want to see him go, but at this point all I want is for him to be appreciated.

8: Who will be the 2012 Stanley Cup champs? The LA Kings or New Jersey Devils?

I’m on Team Brodeur.

9: Who do you think is the best player in the NHL, and why do you think so?

Currently, Sidney Crosby.

10: How many NHL games have you been to? Have any memorable moments that happened at a game you went to?

Five games. The best one I went to was in October when we played the Washington Capitals. Fast paced game, non-stop action, goals galore.

11: Who is your least favorite player on your favorite team?

12: Say you were the GM of your favorite team, and had to make 1 trade, what would it be? (Who would you trade, who would you want to get in return?)

Not gonna answer this because I have no idea tbh

13: When you first started watching hockey, who was your favorite player? Who is it now?

My first favorites were Dan Cloutier (I know…) and Taylor Pyatt. Then it was Luongo. Now it’s Dan Hamhuis and Kevin Bieksa.

14: Do you like any other NHL teams besides your (current) favorite?

I like watching the Nashville Predators. I honestly don’t mind any other teams, even rivals. That makes the game more exciting. The only exception to that is LA and Anaheim (nothing to do with the finals, I never liked LA to begin with). Can’t get into them at all.

15: Favorite OHL player?

Haven’t really paid attention to OHL.

16: Who is one NHL player that you haven’t met yet, that you would love to meet?

17: If you could play a prank on a player of your choice, what would the prank be, and who would you want to prank?

I don’t know if I could pull off any prank that could outsmart him, but it would have to be Keith Ballard.

I think I fall a little in love with people when I catch them in small moments, when they think no one’s looking at them, when they absently twirl a strand of hair between their fingers, when they lick their thumb to turn a page in a book. There’s something beautiful about a person who is lost in a thought, or adjusting their shirt, or is scratching a phantom itch on their arm, or even someone who is looking at someone else like I am looking at them.

Of all the noises that my children will not understand, the one that is nearest to my heart is not from a song or a television show or a jingle. It’s the sound of a modem connecting with another modem across the repurposed telephone infrastructure. It was the noise of being part of the beginning of the Internet.

I heard that sound again this week on Brendan Chillcut’s simple and wondrous site: The Museum of Endangered Sounds. It takes technological objects and lets you relive the noises they made: Tetris, the Windows 95 startup chime, that Nokia ringtone, television static. The site archives not just the intentional sounds — ringtones, etc — but the incidental ones, like the mechanical noise a VHS tape made when it entered the VCR or the way a portable CD player sounded when it skipped. If you grew up at a certain time, these sounds are like technoaural nostalgia whippets. One minute, you’re browsing the Internet in 2012, the next you’re on a bus headed up I-5 to an 8th grade football game against Castle Rock in 1995.

The noises our technologies make, as much as any music, are the soundtrack to an era.Soundscapes are not static; completely new sets of frequencies arrive, old things go. […]

When I think of 2012, I will think of the overworked fan of my laptop and the ding of getting a text message on my iPhone. I will think of the beep of the FastTrak in my car as it debits my credit card so I can pass through a toll onto the Golden Gate Bridge. I will think of Siri’s uncanny valley voice.

But to me, all of those sounds — as symbols of the era in which I’ve come up — remain secondary to the hissing and crackling of the modem handshake.
